"Comparison is the thief of Joy," Teddy Roosevelt once said and it is also a passive form of competition.
You came here with an intention, a purpose, one you don’t need somebody else’s permission to receive. You came here with a promise to yourself, to learn the lessons that would have you do what you were called to. So don’t expect somebody else to know how broken you’ll be if you don’t keep them. Stop explaining what is untrue to the way you are, as if your ideas, feelings, desires, preferences, your choices are an aberration instead of divine and wondrous expression. You, as you are in this moment, are enough.
Blame it on our hunter and gatherer ancestors but one of our core human values is safety. Looking up the meaning of that word in the dictionary is not very satisfying but it’s “safe” to say that the concept relates to the fact that every single human being wants shelter, well-being and protection for themselves, their friends and their children, for the people they love.
